What You Need to Know About Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Are you struggling to gain control of your weight? Do you have a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30? If you’re ready for a life-changing solution to weight loss that doesn’t involve weight loss pills, shakes or diet plans, then keep reading! In this article, we uncover everything you need to know about gastric sleeve surgery.

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery offers a safer and more effective approach to long-lasting and gradual weight loss. This procedure works by restricting the amount of food you eat by reducing the size of your stomach.

During the gastric sleeve procedure, your surgeon will remove a large portion of your stomach, leaving a new smaller stomach about the size of a banana. This creates the sensation of fullness and satiety between meals, which means you’ll eat less and feel fuller, faster.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The gastric sleeve procedure is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia, which means the surgeon will be using a tiny camera called a laparoscope to navigate around your stomach. Your surgeon will make five small incisions in your abdomen, where the laparoscope and other surgical tools will be inserted to operate. During the surgery, these tools will be used to remove about 70% of your stomach.

The remaining portion of your stomach is closed using surgical staples to create a much narrower banana-shaped stomach. The procedure takes between 45 and 60 minutes to complete.

How Does it Cause Weight Loss?

The gastric sleeve procedure takes out a part of the stomach that secretes a “hunger hormone” called ghrelin. Ghrelin is largely responsible for making you feel hungry, as its main function is to increase appetite. Once removed, your hunger urges will quickly and effectively subside, leading to excellent and long-lasting weight loss results.

Is It Really as Good as They Say?

Performed laparoscopically without making any large incisions, the gastric sleeve is a minimally-invasive procedure. This means shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, smaller scars and less pain than open surgical procedures.

Another benefit is that the gastric sleeve doesn’t affect the absorption of food, so nutritional deficiencies are less likely to occur.
