As we wrap up the holiday season and ring in the New Year, we often hear lots of buzz about drastic diets, detox, cleanses, and supplements. They promise everything from removing toxins from your body, to curbing your sweet tooth, to dropping 20 lbs in 3 days. Especially after an indulgent holiday season, these claims may seem extra alluring.
Unfortunately, they often don’t inform you of the potential risks and symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, interactions with medications, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and further health complications.
While some of these options may offer short term results at best, they almost always fail to lead to long-term weight maintenance, health and wellness. In addition, they often contribute to the cycle of yo-yo dieting, which can have a long term negative impact on your body and your health.
This new year, consider a different approach which includes making small, sustainable behavior changes that you can actually maintain and enjoy! Start with implementing one change and once this change is well established and ingrained in habit, add another. Make it fun. Consider ways to be more physically active with activities that you enjoy, as well as better manage stress and support your mental health.
