A recent article published in the Calgary Herald date reveals that obesity rates are increasing in Canada yet bariatric operations in Ontario alone have increased 10 times more. From 2006-2007 to 2012-2013, procedures increased in the province from 297 to 2,846.

Women make up most of the said population. Obesity expert, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, noted that although Canadian obesity rates rose by 300% in recent years, the number of bariatric operations performed in 2012 and 2013 was only 6,000, which is very low compared to the obese population. The Atlantic Provinces tops as having the highest obesity rates in all of Canada.

When asked how Canada should deal with obesity epidemic, Freedhoff suggests that bariatric surgery should be part of the “constellation of care” that is used to deal with obesity. The key factor however remains, that obesity amongst Canadians is still rising.
