What is the training of your SmartShape staff?

Our surgeons have received advanced training in the evaluation, treatment and post-procedure care of Gastric Sleeve, Mini Gastric Bypass, and LAP-BAND® clients. In fact, the SmartShape surgeons are actively involved in the training and education of healthcare professionals (including other surgeons) caring for bariatric surgical patients. During the procedure, you will be cared for by fellowship trained anesthesiologists, with extensive experience in treating obese patients.

SmartShape™ Weight Loss Centre is proud to have one of Canada’s first certified bariatric nurse specialists on our team. How much weight will I lose?

With the SmartShape™ program, weight loss occurs at a safe and healthy rate. With the procedures available at SmartShape™, you can expect to experience a healthy weight loss of one to two pounds per week. Studies show that on average you may be able to sustain a weight loss of 60 to 70 per cent of your excess weight. With SmartShape procedures, you can expect to lose more weight than you would with a traditional diet - you will have more control over the amount you eat, as you will be satisfied with a smaller amount of food.

Weight loss results with SmartShape™ programs will depend on your level of activity, age and underlying health status. It is important to remember that while you have a tool to help you achieve weight loss, making a commitment to a new lifestyle, including improved eating habits, is essential. Continued follow-up through our program has been shown to be a critical factor in the success of the any procedure.

Will I need plastic surgery for the surplus skin when I lose weight?
Most individuals will not need plastic surgery. The SmartShape program is designed for gradual and steady weight loss. However, if plastic surgery is desired, it is typically not considered for at least a year or two after starting the program. Exercise and good nutrition are both important to help with skin elasticity. We recommend that you give your skin the time it needs to adjust before deciding to have additional procedures. Should you consider cosmetic surgery, we offer a complimentary plastic surgery and/or skin rejuvenation consultation at The Plastic Surgery Clinic.
What should I do if I go out to eat?
Order what you want to eat! The SmartShape program doesn’t restrict you from eating any particular food, but helps you control the amount you consume. With the support of your SmartShape coaches, you will be ready to make healthier, smarter decisions when ordering.
How many procedures have been performed at SmartShape Weight Loss Centre?
SmartShape Weight Loss Centre has a record of more than 4,500 weight loss procedures and we continue to treat hundreds of new patients from across Canada each year.
Do you have a doctor on call after hours?
Access to one of our surgeons is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for urgent concerns.

FAQs About the Lap-Band Procedure at SmartShape™

Am I a candidate for the SmartShape™ Lap-Band procedure?

The SmartShape Lap-Band procedure may be ideal for you if you:

  • Have a BMI of 30 and above
  • Have been overweight for more than 5 years
  • Have made serious attempts to lose weight and had only short-term success

Our surgeons will take these factors into account when they determine if the Lap-Band procedure is right for you.

Will I feel pain after the procedure?
You may feel some discomfort in your shoulder or chest, which usually resolves within the first 24 hours after the procedure.
Will I be able to see the port from outside the skin?
No, the port is not visible.
What is a Lap-Band adjustment?
One of the advantages of the Lap-Band is that it can, and should be adjusted according to your individual needs. Adjustments are made by adding fluid (saline) via the adjustment port, making the band a little tighter. The Lap-Band can be tightened or loosened by one of our nurses in as little as 5 minutes.
How will I know if I need an adjustment?

One of the important features of the SmartShape program is working with our team to decide when Lap-Band adjustments are indicated. Here are a few questions that can help decide if an adjustment is needed:

  • Has your weight loss slowed down?
  • Are you feeling hungry after a small meal?
  • Are you able to eat more than you feel you should?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then it may be time for an adjustment. You should call the clinic and speak to one of our nurses about having an assessment.

How many times will I have my Lap-Band adjusted?

For most individuals, the first adjustment takes place approximately four weeks after their Lap-Band procedure. The band will continue to be adjusted over time until you reach the ideal fit that is most beneficial to your weight loss success.

Although each person is different, in the first year, you can expect anywhere from four to six adjustments, but some people have as little as one.

Is the SmartShape Lap-Band procedure available for out-of-province/out-of-town clients? If so, how is the follow-up done and how do I get my adjustments?

FAQs About: the Mini Gastric Bypass Procedure at SmartShape™

Am I a candidate for the Mini Gastric Bypass procedure at SmartShape?
We think the Mini Gastric Bypass is best suited for individuals with a BMI greater than 45, especially if there has been a diagnosis of Type II diabetes.
Will I feel pain after the procedure? Laparoscopic, small incisions
The Mini Gastric Bypass procedure is performed laparoscopically which is a surgical technique where only small incisions are made. Laparoscopic surgery is a low-risk, minimally invasive technique with many benefits including smaller surgical scars, less pain, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and reduced risks of infection.
Do I need to follow a special diet in the weeks immediately following the procedure?
After the Mini Gastric Bypass procedure it is important that you advance your eating on a graduated program starting with liquids – moving up through pureed, then soft, and eventually solid foods, within three to four weeks of surgery. The purpose of this program where we advance the consistency of your food is not to worry about weight loss but merely to allow your operation to heal and minimize the risk of vomiting which could be harmful in the first few weeks. Although you’ll be encourages to make good food choices, the types of food you can eat after your procedure are not restricted. You can eat the same foods as you’ve been eating, only now you’ll ideally be satisfied with smaller portions. It is also very important that you chew your food well and eat slowly or you could risk regurgitation.
Is the MGB program available for out-of-town / out-of-province patients?
Yes, SmartShape welcomes out-of-town and out-of-province patients. The Mini Gastric Bypass procedure is performed at our Centric Health Surgical Centre in Toronto, ON. Can I resume physical activity after the MGB procedure?
Most patients are able to return to their normal activities in about 7-10 days.
Can the MGB procedure be reversed?
Although the Mini gastric Bypass procedure should be considered permanent, it can be reversed with another surgical procedure. This would be very uncommon and wold likely lead to weight regain, however it is possible. This is different from the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass which is very difficult, if not impossible, to reverse.
How does the MGB affect Type 2 diabetes?
Bariatric surgery has emerged as an innovative alternative option in the management of Type 2 diabetes. Many 5-year studies are showing that the Mini Gastric Bypass, as well as other bariatric surgeries, show a profound and durable resolution of type 2 diabetes

These procedures can result in sustained body weight loss and significant improvement in obesity-related comorbidities. Surgical weight loss procedures are recognized by Diabetes Canada for appropriate patients when other interventions fail to achieve a healthy body weight, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.

How is the MGB different than the Roux-en-Y bypass procedure?
The Mini gastric Bypass is both safe and effective. There is just one anastomosis (join) of the intestine to the stomach, which differs from the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass which has two anastomoses. The single anastomosis reduces the risk of complications including hernias, leakage and bleeding. And the Mini Gastric Bypass procedure requires only one night’s stay in hospital.

The Mini Gastric Bypass procedure was developed in 1997 with the goal of duplicating the excellent weight loss results of traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery while at the same time simplifying the procedure, shortening the operating times and reducing complications. For these reasons the Mini Gastric Bypass is gaining in popularity as the modern alternative to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Will I have to take vitamins or minerals as a result of having a MGB?
After the Mini gastric Bypass it will be necessary for you to take some specially chosen supplements on a daily basis. These supplements will ensure that you do not become deficient in some important nutrients such as Iron, Calcium and some B vitamins.
Is it safe to become pregnant after having had the MGB procedure?
Pregnancy after gastric bypass can be safe and healthy if managed well by you and your health care provider. In fact, research suggests that pregnancy after weight-loss surgery might be safer for both mother and baby than pregnancy complicated by obesity.
What is the cost for the SmartShape MGB procedure?
The cost of the Mini Gastric Bypass program at SmartShape is $19,000 which includes the one-night hospital stay. Patients who undergo the MGB procedure are supported by SmartShape’s comprehensive, multi-year post-operative program, which includes online support groups and regular sessions with the clinic’s dietitian and nurses.
