Am I a candidate?
Is the Lap-Band for you?
If you are ready to take an active part in reducing your weight and finding a permanent solution, the Lap-Band may be an ideal treatment option. The Lap-Band by itself will not solve the problem of obesity. The amount of weight lost depends both on the restriction caused by the Lap-Band and on the patient’s motivation and commitment to a new lifestyle and eating habits. It is important to understand the advantages, disadvantages, and potential risks involved.
The Lap-Band may be the right solution if you:
- Are at least 18 years of age.
- Have a BMI of 30 and above
- Have been overweight for more than 5 years.
- Have made serious attempts to lose weight and had only short-term success.
- Have no other diseases that may have caused the obesity.
- Are prepared to make changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.
- Do not drink alcohol in excess and do not have illegal drug dependence.
The Lap-Band may NOT be the right solution if you:
- Have a BMI of less than 30 – since it is not likely that you will achieve adequate weight loss to justify Lap-Band surgery.
- Have untreated inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcers or esophagitis.
- Have severe heart or lung disease that makes you a poor candidate for surgery.
- Have serious or untreated psychological problems or addictions.
- Have a problem that could cause bleeding in the esophagus or stomach, which might include esophageal or gastric varices (dilated veins).
- Have had a previous hiatus hernia repair (Nissen fundoplication). This procedure has distorted the anatomy of the upper stomach and precludes the successful placement of the Lap-Band.
- Are pregnant. However, if a patient becomes pregnant after the Lap-Band has been placed, the band can be deflated to allow the consumption of larger portions during pregnancy.
- Have an autoimmune connective tissue disease, such as scleroderma or systemic lupus erythematosus (Lupus),that requires steroid medication.
The Lap-Band is an effective tool to help you achieve sustained weight loss. The amount of weight lost depends both on the restriction caused by the Lap-Band and on your motivation and commitment to a new lifestyle and eating habits. It is important to understand the advantages, disadvantages, and potential risks involved.
