Gastric Band Procedure
Ideal Patient
The ideal Gastric Band patient is someone who has been unable to sustain significant weight loss with traditional non surgical methods. The majority of individuals with BMI > 35 find the repetitive cycle of weight loss followed by regain (yo-yo dieting) to be frustrating and leads to a feeling of repeated failure and loss of self esteem.
Success with Gastric Band procedure requires that the patient be committed to changing their relationship with food and willing to change the way they eat. It is important that patients be committed to the follow up program and return for band adjustments and counselling when necessary.
Patients with health problems related to their weight will see improvement in these co morbidities and quickly see the benefits of Gastric Band procedure.
The Gastric Band procedure is NOT recommended for patients:
- With conditions that may make them poor surgical candidates or increase the risk of poor results
- Who are unwilling or unable to comply with the required changes in eating behaviour
- Who are pregnant
