Gastric Band Procedure
Contraindications to the Gastric Band
- Patients with inflammatory disease or condition of the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcers, severe esophagitis, or gastric or duodenal Crohns disease.
- Patients with severe heart or lung disease that makes them a poor candidate for surgery.
- Patients with potential upper GI bleeding such as esophageal or gastric varices or patients with portal hypertension.
- Patients with previous gastric surgery or injury such as a gastric perforation at or near the location of the intended band placement.
- Patients who are addicted to alcohol or drugs.
- Patients who are on chronic, long-term steroid treatment.
