An important study was published in the Annals of Surgery in December 2007 by Dr. Paul O’Brien and colleagues from Melbourne Australia. This study showed a 72% reduction is mortality in patients with intentional weight loss (Lap-Band surgery) compared to a matched cohort of patients who did not undergo weight loss surgery. The patients were matched for age, sex and BMI.

Dr. O’Brien and colleagues performed Lap-Band surgery on 996 patients between 1994 and 2005 and had follow up data on over 98%. This is one of the first studies showing that the intentional weight loss achieved by Lap-Band surgery not only reduces or eliminates morbidity, but also leads to improved survival. This is an intuitive result of reduced morbidity but had not been conclusively demonstrated in a well performed scientific study. Drs. O’Brien and Dixon from Melbourne have been pioneers in the development and study of Lap-Band surgery and its benefits. The Surgical Weight Loss Centre has close ties to these respected physicians and applauds them on their important contributions to the field of weight loss surgery.
