On Friday Jan 18th 2008, the Surgical Weight Loss Centre team performed their first Intragastric Balloon procedures. Two patients had the Gastric Balloon device placed without difficulty and were able to leave the clinic within 2 hours. These, and all future, Gastric Balloon patients will be working intensively with our dietitian to establish new eating patterns in order to maintain the weight loss they achieve with the device. The balloon will be removed in six months but the dietary counseling continues for a full year.

The Surgical Weight Loss Centre is excited to introduce a new procedure for patients interested in achieving significant and sustained weight loss.  The Bioenterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) is a soft silicone polymer balloon that is placed in the stomach using gastroscopy and then filled with 600cc of saline.  The Intragastric Balloon works by inducing a sense of satiety or fullness after a much smaller meal.
