Posted in Diabetes Treatment on October 28th, 2009

Type 2 Diabetes has been called one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada. For those who suffer from the disease it can mean a reduced quality of life, higher risk for other health complications and worst of all a shortened life expectancy. However, recent studies have shown that the significant weight loss most patients achieve through the Lap-Band program can lead to improvements and in many cases remission of Type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes A Quiet and Growing Epidemic

Written By Margaret Munro

Rodney Mckenzie was alone in a cabin in northern Saskatchewan when he woke up and realized something was seriously wrong.

“Everything was foggy,” says Mckenzie, recalling the day he began losing his sight five years ago. Luckily it hadn’t snowed and he managed to snowmobile home, sticking to the road he’d come up on.

The 21st Century Epidemic

Link to Article | http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/10/16/f-diabetes-epidemic-global.html

FRIDAY, October 16th, 2009 (CBCNews) — So you’re finding yourself thirsty all the time — a lot more than usual. Or you’ve been really, really tired lately. Can’t seem to get enough sleep.

Maybe you’ve dropped a bunch of weight — without even trying. Funny, but these days, it seems you always have to go pee, even when you’ve just gone.

You dismiss it all as just something you’re going through. Something that will pass.

Well, it could be that you’ve developed a condition that’s going to stick around for the rest of your life.

Linking Weight Loss to Sleep Apnea

Link to article |http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/09/090928172344.htm

TUESDAY, Sept 29, 2009 (ScienceDaily) — More than 12 million people in the U.S. suffer from sleep apnea, most common among the overweight and obese. More than just loud snoring, it can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease and a poor quality of life. For years, doctors have told patients with sleep apnea that their best bet for alleviating it would be to lose weight, but there’s been very little research-based evidence to prove that.

The Obesity Epidemic Isn’t Just About Willpower

Written By Bernadine Healey, M.D.

WEDNESDAY, October 14 2009 (usnews.com) – Obesity, not so long ago an issue of personal struggle with fatty foods and bulging waistline, has of late become Public Health Enemy No. 1, blamed for almost a third of the rise in healthcare spending. Overeaters now find themselves in the same category as smokers or drug addicts, tainted with the aura of moral weakness and lack of willpower. This perspective has begun to spawn tough-love policies geared to prod people into thinness. Discriminating against the chubby in social and even employment settings seems to be gaining on the politically correct scale. And levying a “sin tax” on sweet treats, starting with sugary sodas and fruit juices, has a growing following on Capitol Hill.

Number of Diabetics Increased More Than 145 000 Within A Year

Link to article | http://topnews.us/content/27540-number-diabetics-increased-more-145000-within-year

Written By Amit Pathania

SUNDAY, Oct 4 2009 (topnews.us) - Unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle not increases the risk of obesity but it also increases the risk of various diseases like diabetes. Recent data indicates that number of diabetics has increased more than 145,000 within a year.

Obeseness Increases Diabetic Chances

The recent data was compiled on the basis of the information supplied by the GPs. Data analysis shows that more than 2.6 million people in the UK are now registered as diabetics whereas 5.2 million people were registered as obese hence the number of diabetics could increase as obese people have higher risk of diabetes.

Data also indicated that nearly 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes which is result of unhealthy eating habits. It is also linked to obesity. Eight out of ten diabetics were overweight when their diabetes was diagnosed.

Diabetes UK chief executive Douglas Smallwood said: “Many, but not all, people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, therefore we need to do all we can to raise awareness of diabetes and help people understand how following a balanced diet and leading an active lifestyle can help reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”
